Last Day of Competition

Danish dynasty - Denmark's Womens Handball Team has won three consecutive Gold Medals, though they needed a penelty shoot-out to defeat a game Chinese team today.

Real Dream Team - USA Womens' Basketball - Undefeated in 1996, 2000, & 2004.. Australia is up-and-coming but still not quite on USA's level. And Lisa Leslie is still my favorite...

Factoid - In the 1896 Athens Games there were 17 runners in the Marathon...They breakfasted on milk and beer.

Leader at 36 km of the Marathon, Vanderlei Lima (BRA) becomes a victim of a mentally distrubed ex-priest from Ireland...The disruptor is lucky he wasn't shot as a terrorist.

I can imagine the adrenaline rush when entering the Panathinaiko marble stadium then to realize you still have to do one and a quarter laps before the race is over...The last 333 meters must seem like a marathon in itself.

Very difficult marathon course included a climb of about 860 ft plus the 85+ degree heat. The winner was Stefan Baldoni (ITA) with an amazing 2:10:55 time...Second was Meb Keflezighi (USA) about a halfminute behind, and Lima was about 46 seconds behind Keflezighi for the Bronze.

Lima's spirited and joyful entrance into Panathinaiko after the street incident with Priest Bozo, earned him the Pierre de Coubertin Medal for Sportsmanship and Fair Play from the IOC.

Andre Ward salvaged USA boxing with a Gold, after they were shut out 4 years ago.
