Day 10 / Sunday / Aug. 22, 2004

Really looking forward to the debut of Womens Wrestling...Just think womens wrestling with no intentional eye gouges, no bra and panty matches, no mud, no chairs, no outside interference....

Cubs win! Cubs win! - The Olympic equivalent to the Cubbies, USA Mens Rowing 8's with Cox, has not won a medal in 40 years (Cubs nearly 60 years since their last pennant) Finally the drought ended today.

The Womens 100m semi sounded very scripted. Tom Hammond, Carol Lewis, et.al, seemed to predict that Gail Devers wasn't going to be able to finish, well before they actually televised the race. If so, then it probably means that NBC's prepackaged track coverage includes phony enthusiasm from its commentators when they do their "live" calls to which they already have knowledge of the outcome.

Definite scripting but great scripting - Olympic Moments with Jimmy Roberts- "..going through the ruins of Greece searching for a country's soul...only to find it in one of the newest buildings... champions don't always come in first..." The feature was about a National Hero Weightlifter who earned the bronze medal.

Woman in a little girl's sport. It sounded so strange to hear USA Gymnast Annia Hatch's coach is her husband Alan, being so used to 13-14-15 year-old gymnasts in the Olympics.

Still waiting on Egypt and Bolivia's first medals. Japan is still my top performer in Medal Madness Fantasy Game (NBCOlympics.com)

Dominance - China has won every Gold Medal ever awarded for Table Tennis

Salute any Marathon winner in 90+ degree heat - Japan's Nijiki Niguchi

A shock - Maurice Greene who took 3rd in the 100m was gracious and humble during an interview.

Greene again - His 9.87 seconds was only good enough for a Bronze Medal this time...Four years ago, the same time got him Gold...In this year's race the top 5 finished in under 10 seconds...Justin Gatlin's (USA) winning time was 9.85 seconds. Powell from Jamaica was second at 9.86.

Is there a changing of the guard coming in Gymnastics? China, USA, Romania, and Japan remain strong, but Russia and the other former Soviet Republics seem to be faltering...The Koreans, French, Australians, and Greeks(!) are looming on the horizon. Dimosthenis Tampakos (GRE) who won Gold this year in front of the home folks, also won a silver in Sydney.
