There are a couple of added dialogue scenes and the extended ending between Father Dyer and Lt Kinderman which sets up the sequel Exorcist III. Then there's the spider-walking scene. It adds to the shock value of the movie. I can see why it was cut from the original. It would have cinched an X-Rating. There are some more subtle changes too. The presence of the demon(s) is/are more visible. Watching this version, I get the impression that two separate entities are responsible for the possession. One is the Winged Pazuzu which appears in statue form. The other is the Ghostly White Face, which also appeared in Father Karras' dreams. Anyway, it did spawn two distinctly different sequels, E2 dealt with Pazuzu, while E3 dealt with something else.

Whatever, this is one of my all-time favorite movie series.
