Implausible dark comedy directed by Sally Field stars Minnie Driver as an obsessive and perennial Beauty Pageant contestant (?). With the help of her best friend (Joey Lauren Adams), she plays a string of dirty tricks on the competition while hiding secrets. She's the ultimate user not worried about who she steps on to get what she wants.

There seems to be a schizophrenia here. I am not really sure if it's supposed to be satirical or a pure chick-flick. Though I think Driver is a cutie, she is by no means what I would think of Beauty Contestant material. She does the obsessive bit very well and portraying an Illinois girl, there is no hint of an English accent. Adams is unbelievably saintly as the best friend. Hallie Eisenberg does a lot of unnecessary yelling and cuteness aside, she should not be acting in anything longer than her Pepsi commercials. Leslie Stafanson was also a caricature as the TV journalist hell bent on revenge against Driver. Kathleen Turner appears as an over-the-hill diva that trains would be beauty pageant contestants.

Driver does save it from becoming drivel.

My grade B

PG-13 for language and sexual innuendo.
