The Tragedy of Henry Blake (11/15/00)

"Abyssinia Henry" is sort of a landmark episode in television history, killing off a beloved regular character. It upset many viewers who wrote angry letters of protest. It also brought home the reality of war, beloved people do not always return.

The earlier M*A*S*H seasons' episodes were edgier and a little on the cruel side. Blake's own behavior as an officer (albeit involuntary) of the US Army Reserves was questionable. He was portrayed as a boozer, buffoon, and adulterer (with gorgeous nurse Leslie Scorch (Linda Meikheljohn)). Yet the character grew on the viewer due to excellent writing and the superb performances of McLean Stevenson. The excellent doctor and inept administrator became a fan favorite as did almost all M*A*S*H characters.

He left behind a beautiful wife and three children including a newborn son which he had never met. The character's death was felt deeply by many viewers as being all-too real. He is missed greatly.

The subsequent death of McLean Stevenson made many fans relive the sadness they felt when Radar read the message of Henry Blake's plane being shot down.
